How to Measure for Blinds

We will make all the necessary deductions when we place the order. If you are unsure about any of the instructions below, please feel free to contact our office to ask for assistance.

We created a PDF Template which can be used to write down your measurements. The template will also guide you from start to finish for each window/sliding door.

Step 1: Is the opening deep enough?

Check the reveal depth.
  • Measure the depth of the window opening. Make a note of the smallest distance from the front of the opening to the frame of the window.
  • The minimum reveal depth required for different types of blinds is as follows:
    • Venetian blinds: More than 60mm
    • Roller blinds: More than 60mm
    • 127mm vertical blinds: More than 90mm
    • 90mm vertical blinds: More than 60mm

If the opening is not deep enough
  • The blind will not fit inside the opening and will have to be installed on the outside against the wall (facefix installation).
  • You can continue to the Measure the Opening section.

Step 2: Are there any obstructions in the opening?

Measure how much space the handle/obstruction take up. Subtract above measurement from the available reveal/opening depth.

  • Reveal space = 100mm
  • Handle Protruding = 30mm
  • 100mm-30mm = 70mm

The blind will fit inside the opening since this space is greater than the 60mm space needed if you are measuring for venetian-, vertical- or roller blinds.

Step 3: Measure the widths

Take tight wall-to-wall measurements of the top-, middle- and bottom widths of the opening

Step 4: Measure the drops

Take tight wall-to-wall measurements of the Left-, middle- and right drops of the opening

Step 5: Are there any cutouts that needs to be made?

If there are tiles in the opening. Measure the thickness and height of each respective side.

Pro Tip:

Always measure large windows as if the blind will have to be split into two or more blinds. In other words, take the full width of the opening and then the width of one side of the window frame to determine the width of the first blind. Subtract the width of the blind from the total width to determine the measurements of the second blind. See How to Measure a Sliding Door.

Measuring For Outside Mounted Blinds

Use the same measurements as above but add the following to the measurements to ensure the blind is big enough to overlap all the sides of the window:

  • Venetian Blinds: Width +130mm & Drop +150mm
  • Roller Blinds: Width +150mm & Drop +100mm
  • 127mm Vertical Blinds: Width +300mm & Drop +200mm
  • 90mm Vertical Blinds: Width +270mm & Drop +200mm

Guide to Measure a Sliding Door Opening:

Normal Sliding Door

  1. Measure the total width of the opening first
  2. Close the sliding section of the sliding door and measure from the one side of the wall to the middle of the frame of the sliding door
  3. Deduct the measurement (from step 2) from the total width (in step 1) to get the other side’s measurements.
  4. Total width (step 1) - Sliding Section (step 2) = Measurement for blind 2
  5. Remember to take the measurements for the skirting as well.

If There Is A Window On The Side:

  1. Measure the width of the windowsill and deduct from the total width
  2. Measure the sliding section as above and deduct from the total width
  3. Total width - (Windowsill width + Sliding Section) = Middle blind’s Width
